On Saturday 8th of October, the last Saturday of the season, the River Teign Restoration Project hosted an end of season “thank you to volunteer’s” fishing session at Fernworthy reservoir. This was by kind permission of Dil Singh, Visitor Experience Manager at South West Lakes Trust.
So on a glorious afternoon 5 volunteers from the project came along for a few hours of fishing, fishing chat, and fun. Geoff Stephens, project officer, brought a range of rods to try out including a 16 ft double handed salmon rod (not fished with). A few different cast’s were demonstrated and a bit of coaching given to a fairly new recruit to fly fishing.
Several fish were seen rising in the very calm conditions and 6 trout were brought to hand with at least twice that number risen and missed. A couple more were lightly hooked and fell off after a few seconds. Bill Blake caught 3 trout. As well as volunteering for the Teign project Bill also volunteers as a site guardian & bailiff for SWLT at Fernworthy so was the well deserved “top rod”. Successful flies were mallard & claret, sedgehog, and daiwl bach.
A great way to end a drought ridden season. Many thanks to Dil Singh and SWLT.
